Student Transition Coordinator

Windigo First Nation Council is seeking a full-time Student Transition Coordinator.  The Student Transition Coordinator will be responsible for the development and implementation of a transition program that serves WFNC students from northern communities to make a smooth and successful transition by attending in public high school settings in the region. This position will also work other stakeholders or partner organizations and the high schools to deal with student transition issues.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Develop policies and procedures for the transition program.
  • Develop procedures for the peer mentorship program.
  • Develop transition materials and resources to be used by both teachers and students.
  • Create a Work Plan to address the transitional activities.
  • Ensure that the transition and peer mentorship programs are implemented; undertake evaluation of the various components of the programs.
  • Liaise with other agencies (e.g. NAN, KPDSB, and other Tribal councils) that developed transition programs for us to use a guiding document as we develop for one in our department.
  • Ensure there is coordination of the transition process between the teachers, the students, the parents, and the LEA/Band Council.
  • Liaise between schools in the northern communities and public schools/NNEC schools in Sioux lookout, Dryden and Thunder Bay, etc.
  • Arrange High School Orientation visits.
  • Ensure that a transition plan is developed for each grade 8 student.
  • Provide training for the school personnel to implement the transition and peer mentorship programs.
  • Coordinate and deliver training programs on student transition for social counsellors.
  • Prepare reports for supervisors.
  • Will be assigned to other duties consistent with the position.

     

    Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

    Knowledge

    • A bachelor's degree in education or social work coupled with three (3) years of experience in the classroom or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
    • Current registration with the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) as an asset.
    • Understanding and experience working with regional indigenous communities and awareness of local cultural protocols.
    • Knowledge and understanding of First Nation and Ontario education systems.
    • Ability to demonstrate and respond to the developmental needs of students.
    • Ability to demonstrate as an advocate and problem solver.

    Skills

    • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills including working effectively with students, staff, faculty, Elders, community members, parents/guardians, and other applicable organizations.
    • Ability to demonstrate interpersonal and leadership skills.
    • A Valid Ontario driver's license is required.

    Personal Attributes

    • Must be able to perform duties with minimal supervision.
    • Must be willing to travel as required.
    • Must provide a current Criminal Record Check.

    Working Conditions

    • Must be willing to travel to Windigo First Nations Communities.
    • May have to lift, carry, and manage equipment and supplies.
    • May have to multitask to manage several tasks as required.
    • Must be prepared to deal with emergencies and stressful situations at any time.

     

    Location: Sioux Lookout

    Salary Range: $75,000.00 to $80,000.00 per annum based on education and proven experience.
